Digital X-rays!
As you know, many medical facilities now offer digital radiographs for the benefit of their patients. Digital x-rays greatly reduce the amount of radiation that the patient is exposed to. The x-ray is handled electronically – speeding the processing and viewing of the film to only seconds. Dr. Clifford is happy to announce that we now use this high-tech system in our dental office! X-rays can be taken and viewed immediately on the operatory computer screen, allowing instantaneous feedback and diagnosis. Please feel free to call with any questions regarding our latest technology!
What is that high pitched tool you use at each cleaning appointment?
The ultrasonic scaler just may be our best weapon in preventing and maintaining periodontal disease. The ultrasonic scaler has been around for about 30 years. It primarily was used to remove heavy calculus or tartar from above the gumline. As recently as the 1960’s, the common thought was that periodontal disease was largely due to irritation caused by rough calculus deposits under the gums. New research tells us that periodontal disease is caused by bacteria.
The ultrasonic scaler works by using high-frequency vibrations along with a fine water spray to break up calculus. The water not only keeps the instrument cool but actually destroys the bacteria. The cell wall of the bacteria cannot tolerate the frequency of the vibration, causing the cell wall to burst. The lavage effect produced by the water used with the power scaler provides a constant flushing activity of the bacteria from under the gums.
With the most current research in mind, we use the ultrasonic scaler on most of our patients ranging in age from teenagers on up. At routine cleanings and periodontal maintenance appointments, the ultrasonic scaler removes plaque, bacteria and calculus from above and below the gumline quickly, easily and comfortably. It leaves your gums feeling well stimulated and an overall fresh clean feeling in your mouth.
